Father of the Bride

I wrote this in 1999 prior to my daughter's wedding

I've been to quite a few weddings,
And they all brought a tear to my eye.
I would sit in my pew with nothing to do.
Perhaps my big chance would pass by.

I would try to imagine how good it must feel
To stand at the front, proud and tall.
Was I doomed to depart this world
With my heart still craving the best job of all.

Now, I'm not the right shape to be bridesmaid.
My curves seem to go the wrong way.
Can't be matron of honour, that ones a goner.
The beard would give me away.

I'd been a best man, and a long time ago,
I seem to recall being groom.
No, I just wanted to give my daughter to live
Somewhere else. Well, I'd plans for her room.

You see, I've longed to be father of the bride.
I've been dying to give her away.
I'd go green with envy seeing some lucky bloke
Handing over a child on the day.

It's not that I don't love my daughter.
She's been good, she would probably say great,
But as for me being father of the bride,
She seemed set on making me wait.

Then along came young Steve, the signs looked good.
Could he be the man of MY dream.
He'd got a good job, and I'm told a few bob,
And supported the right football team.

After a while, the question was popped.
He wanted to marry our Sue.
As if I'd say no. It was all systems go.
My wish was about to come true.

My big day was chosen, the planning commenced.
Though I just couldn't fathom the reason
For a football supporter to have MY big day
On a Saturday in the heart of the season.

When the fixtures came out, my fears were confirmed.
At home on the day that was chosen
Should I grab at the chance to be the father of the bride.
Or sit at the match, wet and frozen.

What a shocking dilemma. What should I choose
I've a season ticket, I'd already paid.
But the match moved to Sunday to be on TV
So now full wedding plans could be laid.

So, it's football tomorrow, and the wedding today.
And what an ocassion it's been
Today, I'm father of the bride, at last,
I've fullfilled my long held dream.
